My Brush Out

Over the past 5 years I have worn my hair in every natural hairstyle I could think of but one of my favorite has been when I brush my hair out. I like when I can wear it down like in the picture above and it not be dry.

To achieve this look I put my hair in two braids the night before and just take them down in the morning. I am still looking to find the perfect moisturizer for my hair but I must say that I do enjoy using Garnier conditioners, and Mixed Chicks products.

Change in hair texture...

I have noticed that not only over the years but as my hair grows my hair texture seems to change a bit. It will go from tighter curls when it is short, and as it grows turns into waves and curls at the end. I have often wondered why that is... sometimes I think that my hair changed texture because I put heat on it in the past which could have made my curls more loose and since I have not straightend my hair a lot like I used to my curls are more defined.

At this point I have finally found some products that work on my hair so I do not have to use 20 different products to make my hair look the way I want it to. I use Garnier Cream Conditioner Wonder Waves and Krew Comb. I have posted videos to show how well these products work for me.

My Big Chop Photo

I decided to go natural fully in 2006 but did the Big Chop in 2007. I was looking everywhere for a picture and finally found one. I was so happy when I did this. I went to the salon and told the lady to cut every piece that was straight, and she looked shocked but she did it. I was amazed that my stylist a black woman did not know how to style Natural Hair. All she wanted to do was straighten it. She kept saying my "type" of hair would look so good straight. If I wanted my hair to be straight I would not have told her to cut the straight pieces out of my hair.

It is really interesting to me how people think. What good is length if your hair is not healthy? My hair was not doing what I wanted it do so it was time to let it go.

Hair is nothing without the person who has it.

What does Society Want to See from Me???

I am new to the Oklahoma area. I am a military wife, proudly but with that comes uprooting every few years which leaves me out of work and scrambling to find another one as soon as possible. Usually when I go to a job interview I wear my hair straight because I felt that I would mesh better with everyone. That in itself is wrong because I was hiding myself from myself.

So now, here I am back in the job search thinking about who I am. I can tell you this. I am everything: Straight, Curly, Natural, and Naptural. I encompass all these things and proud to do so but I am naturally Naptural ninety-five percent of the time. I feel that when I go to job interviews I should do more of the same, and show them who I am.

My hair is curly... and I love it. If I show confidence and how much I truly love me, I have a feeling they will love me too... Naturally.

Natural or Straight?!?!???

I Love Being Natural

I really cannot express enough how free I feel when I wear my hair natural, and when I see others wear their hair this way as well. I do feel it takes a certain level of confidence because you have to deal with the stares and such... unfortunately I get the worst comments from other black people. People of other races seem to really love it. I have a friend who is another race who always told me she loved my hair better natural instead of straight. I was shocked to hear this but as time went on I found the beauty within myself and began to really, really love my hair for what it is instead of what it's not.

Chill Day

Hmmm.... Today I took a shower, but did not wet my hair. I did not feel like messing with it, so what I did was put some Krew Comb on my edges, used my spray bottle that has water and Mixed Chicks leave in Conditioner in it and pulled my hair into a high pony tail then wrapped my hair into a poofy bun. I accessorized with some earrings and calling it a day!

I love natural hair because I still have my waves and texture even if my hair is pulled up and away from my face.

Who says Natural Hair Can't grow???

I recently cut my hair in November of 2009. I cut it because my flat iron was damaging my hair. I knew it was damaged because my ends would no longer curl naturally... instead they just went straight. This was a problem for me and also resulted in me no longer using that Flat Iron. Now when I straighten my hair I use the InStyler, but that is another story. I am posting two pictures today with my hair in its natural state; one when I first got my hair cut in November of 2009(right), and Today June 7, 2010 (left).

I will also post what my hair looked like with the InStyler flat iron when I first got it cut and now.

Natural hair can grow when you take care of it. I am not an expert but I can say that my hair is healthy, and I love my natural hair, but don't mind straightening from time to time either.

Ordered more Mixed Chicks

Yep, I must say I am in love... with Mixed Chicks hair products. What I love the most about this product is that you do not need to have mixed hair for the products to work. I just ordered a 1 liter bottle of the Mixed Chicks Leave in Conditioner online.... they don't sell Mixed Chicks products in my area so I go online. The website is www.MixedChicks.net . They should pay me for the good things I say about them lol! Anyway this product set me back $50.00 but it's worth it. They also have a 99 cent trial pack.

Styling my hair

My Son's Hair

Whew, I have a task ahead of me today... doing my son's hair. We went swimming yesterday so I took his hair out of the twists and let his hair be free. His hair is thick and compressed. What I have done in the past is wash and then blow dry his hair so it wouldn't hurt him as much.

I love his hair because his texture is a bit different from mine. It is more coarse which I have noticed can hold braids longer.

I use regular hair grease and water from a spray bottle on his hair, and when I do individual braids on his hair can last a little over a month. I have recently started doing twists on his hair. He loves shaking his head and feeling his hair.

5 years and counting....

I thought it would be best to say how long I have been natural. I have been on my journey for 5 straight years. I got my first perm when I was 23 and that lasted only 2 years. I didn't realize what I had. I missed my natural waves, kinks, and curls... and so did my husband.

I went for the big chop and made the hairstylist mad. I walked in and told her to cut every straight piece you see... and she did. Then as she was styling my hair she practically begged me to let her straighten my hair. AHEM, isn't that defeating the purpose??? lol! She told me my hair would look so much better straight. I told her my hair looks so good natural and that is what I am paying for.

She did not know how to style natural hair and was addicted to that hair crack. I told her to just wet my hair and put some product in it. It worked and I have been rocking it ever since.

Don't get me wrong, I will straighten my hair with the InStyler every now and then, but I love my natural hair. I hope you all love your natural hair too because it is beautiful.

Let no one tell you differently.

My Hair Products for the Moment

Well, this is my 5th day using the Mixed Chicks hair products. I wanted to see how good this product would be for me so I am using them exclusively. I purchased the Mixed Chicks Shampoo, Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner, as well as the Mixed Chicks Leave In conditioner. I must say that I like the products but I see the same results as I did when using Garnier Products.

I will say that I love the smell of the products. My husband says that he hasn't noticed a difference and my curls and waves are the same. I guess the products are to help manageability.... I dunno. At any rate I may not buy any more of this product knowing that I can get Garnier products that do the same thing for a fraction of the cost.
The picture I posted shows all the Mixed Chicks products I am currently using including my Wide Tooth comb. I recommend that everyone has one. Only comb your hair when it's wet. I comb my hair in the shower and that is it. You subject your locks to breakage when you comb it when it is dry.

What NOT to do

My hair from what I have learned is a 3c, which is wavy, curly type pattern and very thick. The main thing I have learned is that I shouldn't comb my hair in it's natural state when it is STRAIGHT. This will result in breakage. I will post the products I currently use in a future post. Your natural hair can break easily so you should also comb your hair with a wide toothed comb from tip to root to make sure that you protect your hair as much as possible.

STAYING NATURAL

Staying Natural is not hard for me because I have tried everything else; weaves, perms, hair dye, EVERYTHING!!! When I got my first perm 6 years ago I loved the fact that it was straight all the time. Then I started missing my waves and curls so I cut the perm out completely and started over. I also stopped wearing weaves and wigs because I did not like who I was when I took all of the fakeness out. This was a huge problem for me because I felt that I was beginning to not like who I was for me.

I began to find out that I was not alone in my journey when I scoured the internet and found other sites such as fotki.com.

This will be the beginning of many posts to come of natural hairstyles and products I try on myself.
